Q.How safe is acupuncture and is it painful?
A. The needles used in acupuncture at the East West Clinic are sterile, disposable and extremely smooth and fine. This makes for the least amount of sensation upon insertion. The most effective treatment is when there is a slight neurological response when the needles are manipulated after insertion. One of the most common responses during and after most acupuncture treatments is a sense of relaxation and ease. In fact, it is not uncommon for patients receiving acupuncture to drift off into a pleasant state.
Q. How many treatments will I need and how frequent should they be administered?
A. People are usually amazed at how soon they respond to acupuncture. For most conditions and for the fastest results it is ideal to receive 2 or 3 treatments per week for 2 0r 3 weeks initially. This allows for a better assessment of the results both by the practitioner and the patient. For more chronic conditions weekly visits over a longer period of time is to be expected. For general maintenance once every other week or monthly is sufficient. In any case for most conditions you should allow for 10 to 12 treatments before evaluating your results..
Q. Can one have herbal and acupuncture treatments while undergoing conventional medical treatment?
A. Usually this does not pose a problem because both systems work at a different level and when used together in this way, can be complementary with each other. In some instances the use of certain drugs especially those that affect the nervous system will compromise to some extent one's response to acupuncture. Otherwise we are regularly keeping abreast with the latest discoveries and evaluating them in terms of practice.
Q. Are treatments covered by Insurance, HMO's or governmental entitlement programs?
A. Many insurance companies and entitlement programs now cover acupuncture. To keep office costs down, we ask patients to pay and we give them a receipt so they can place claims to their insurance provider.
